People influence us and help define us both positively and negatively. Look around—are you surrounding yourself with people who lift you up or bring you down? Those people who you view as negative influences, why do you have them in your life? What purpose might they serve?
Even though it may seem like the obvious and most logical response would be “nothing”, there must be something you get from having them in your life.
We have the ability to make both conscious and unconscious choices; to not do something or to allow someone into our lives.
For example, have you ever burned yourself before? In that moment, you made both a conscious and an unconscious choice to never do it again.
If we go back to the question of what purpose people are serving in your life, you will see that you are getting something from the relationship. Most often, they are relationships that you feel unable to complete, like a relative or close friend that needs you. So what can you do in those instances?
First, you must identify what you are getting out of the relationship, and then decide what to do with that. If it is a relationship that you are ready to complete and you want to know how, ask one of our experienced coaches to guide you through the process. Sometimes, it just takes having someone else show you what you can’t see or support you in knowing how to complete a relationship that no longer serves you.
